UK greetings and gifting retailer Clinton Cards has bought 196 Birthdays stores and the brand name from its administrator, Zolfo Cooper, in a deal worth $5.7 million of which $5.30 million will be covered by a reduction in the amount owed by Birthdays to Clinton.
Clinton owned the Birthdays chain until Birthdays was placed into administration last month.
The 196 Birthdays stores that Clinton has bought include 29 that operate under Clinton leases. The stores will be managed from the Clinton head office in Essex.
The deal saves the jobs of almost 1,500 people.
