Nick to Air Special 10th Anniversary SpongeBob Weekend

In celebration of SpongeBob SquarePants’ 10th anniversary, Nickelodeon will air a 50-hour weekend programming event, including the first documentary based on the character on sister station VH1.

Beginning on July 14, VH1 will air Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants. Nickelodeon commissioned the one-hour special, which will chronicle the character’s journey toward international pop culture icon. The documentary will also feature an opening song from Avril Lavigne, commentary from creator Steve Hillenburg and thoughts from celeb fans such as LeBron James, Ricky Gervais and Rosario Dawson.

Nickelodeon will air To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants on July 17, followed by a 50-hour marathon. The top 10 most memorable SpongeBob episodes, picked by fans on Nick.com, and the The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie will broadcast on July 18. The event will end on July 18 with a top 10 countdown of celebrities’ favorite episodes.

Along with 10 new episodes, Nickelodeon also plans to debut an hour-long TV movie Truth or Dare this fall. Celebrity guest stars will include Will Ferrell, Ricke Gervais, Craig Ferguson, Robin Williams and others.
