Sony Beefs Up 3-D Presence with New MMO Space, PGA

To strengthen itself in the emerging 3-D market, Sony Computer Entertainment America has launched Sodium One, a massively multi-player online game space with 3-D technology. The company also plans to explore a 3-D experience with the PGA Tour.

Sodium One is Sony’s first MMO destination, where Playstation Home gamers can battle in multiple levels, earn credits and rewards to be redeemed in the game, unlock additional levels, play mini-games and purchase virtual items. Players can also create their own avatar and communicate with others in real time. Sodium One, which will evolve over time with more games and community events, was developed by Outso and published by Lockwood Publishing.

Meanwhile, Sony and the PGA Tour are developing a plan to shoot the 2011 Sony Open in Hawaii in 3-D and make it available for distribution in 3-D to select audiences. Portions of the events prior to the Sony Open will be shot in 3-D as a test.

“We are excited about working with Sony to showcase the potential of 3-D technology at the 2011 Sony Open in Hawaii,” says Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner. “We believe that 3-D has the potential to put the fan right in the center of the action and make our telecasts even more exciting and engaging. The beauty of the Sony Open in Hawaii makes this the perfect setting to debut this technology.”
