Reading Rainbow Get Digital Update

“Reading Rainbow,” the PBS children’s series that aired for more than 20 years, is making a comeback as an app.

Featuring content from leading children’s publishers including Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Charlesbridge Publishing, Kane Press and Peachtree Publishers, the new app will deliver a library of hundreds of curated books and all new videos to encourage reading among children.

"Reading will never go out of style, but the tools used for learning are changing,” says LeVar Burton, host and producer, “Reading Rainbow.” “I am excited to bring ‘Reading Rainbow’ back so that parents who watched the show can now share that same feel-good experience with their own children, but on a platform that resonates with today's digital kids."

Similar to the original series, children will journey with Burton on in-app video “field trips” that connect the stories children read to the world they live in, using a combination of new videos and classic segments from the TV show. Designed for children ages 3 to 9, the app is developed exclusively for iPad.

The Reading Rainbow app is the inaugural project of RRKidz, a digital media company co-founded by Burton and entertainment veteran Mark Wolfe. RRKidz holds global rights to the Reading Rainbow brand through a partnership with series creator, WNED-TV, a PBS station.
